Metal can be the perfect choice for many applications...

Metal has made life possible and productive for thousands of years while adding durable beauty to our daily tasks. Metal can be rustic or sleek; rich brown copper or mirror-polished stainless steel; hammered into wispy-thin gold leaf or hot rolled into inch-thick plate. Many metals can last thousands of years with little or no maintenance, be left to weather or be colorfully patinated, painted, or powder-coated. Zigzag Metalworks uses traditional tools, methods, and machines (rather than CAD/CAM/CNC/3D) to design, cut, bend, shape, roll, weld, and solder raw materials into practical and decorative creations.

Metal finishes include brushed, polished, or "mill" for aluminum and stainless. Copper and zinc can be left untreated to develop a unique patina as the metal reacts to its environment. These metals can also be guided with certain chemicals and processes to achieve desired color palettes, then left to react further or be sealed with wax or lacquer. Aluminum and steel sheets are available pre-painted with a durable finish in many colors. Aluminum is also available with an anodized finish (an electrolytic process similar to plating). Sheets of various metals are available pre-punched or laser-cut in repeating patterns for making room dividers, unique wall treatments, or privacy screens. Custom patterns or logos can be carefully hand cut through the metal, or cut with a plasma torch if a rustic look is preferred. The possibilities are endless.

Zigzag Metalworks is, essentially, one person: Will Priestley, with decades of experience working with many types of materials to create aesthetic solutions for challenging situations. Priestley found his "calling" early in life with vocational school training for four years in sheet metal fabrication, then self-employed in remodeling, design, cabinetmaking, and homebuilding, which then evolved into a business providing lightning protection systems--primarily for mountaintop and lakeside homes, along with some churches, government buildings, and other unique structures. The lightning work often required special metalworking procedures and occasionally branched off into providing architectural metalwork for the customer, which brings us to the present.

Zigzag Metalworks is housed in a newly built shop adjacent to the old cabinet shop, so many projects that would benefit from combining wood with metal can be produced in one location, by one person. In addition to wood and metal, Priestley enjoys working with granite (natural boulders or polished slabs) and textiles (fiber or metal). Manipulating materials into useful and decorative objects, in styles ranging from Art Deco to contemporary, has been a life-long passion for Priestley.

Service area for installations is primarily the "Upper Valley" of central New Hampshire and Vermont. Other New England locations will be considered, or finished products/components could be shipped for installation by others. Please note: Zigzag Metalworks is not a repair shop. Unfortunately, the hours and overhead costs for doing repairs usually makes this type of work impractical. On the other hand, if the goal is to incorporate a cherished heirloom into a new creation, that could be an interesting possibility.
